UNIT X UNIT 3 | 93 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Be aware that some students may need a little more time to prepare their oral answers to the Check In questions. Read the questions aloud and then tell students to think about and formulate their answers in pairs before discussing them as a class. Amplify Have students brainstorm other ways that Kiki could get to see the Pueblo. Prompt them to infer why Kiki asks if her mom or Uncle Tim can take her around. Ask: How can tours teach us about our roots? Reading • Make predictions Have students revisit their predictions. Ask: Do you remember the prediction you made before we started reading Kiki’s Journey? Is your prediction correct so far? Do you need to change it? • Understand vocabulary in context Direct students’ attention to tour on page 93. Ask: Who can remind us what tour means? Let’s look at the words around it: go and take. Do we go somewhere on a tour? Can we take a tour with our hands, like we take a cookie? Have you ever taken something you can’t touch? Have you ever taken a journey or a tour? • Interpret a character’s feelings Have students read the text on page 93 again. Ask: How does Kiki react to her mother’s suggestions? (She’s surprised.) What does Kiki’s first question tell us about her experience baking bread? (Kiki had never seen an adobe oven before. Kiki had never made bread.) Elicit from students how they would feel about taking a tour of a place by themselves. • Use images to aid comprehension Tell pairs with mixed proficiency to discuss the illustrations in the story. Then ask one pair to describe an illustration and have another pair identify the illustration and the text it illustrates. Continue with other illustrations. Ask: How did looking at the illustrations help you check your understanding of the story? • Check In Recall relevant details Discuss the questions as a class. Then have students respond to the questions independently, reminding them to locate relevant details in the text to support their responses. ANSWERS 1. Kiki’s mom wants her to learn how to bake bread and to take a tour of the Pueblo. 2. Kiki’s mom wants her to get to know her roots. PRACTICE GLOSSARY adobe oven apron “Are we going to bake it in that?” I pointed to the adobe oven outside the house. “Yep. I haven’t baked bread in years—come on, you’ve got to learn how to do it,” Mom said, smiling. “Can’t be Tiwa and not know how to bake bread! And I was thinking, maybe tomorrow you can go take a tour of the Pueblo.” “Take a tour? Like the tourists?” I asked as I slowly put on the apron that my Grandma had given me. “Can’t you or Uncle Tim take me around?” Mom shook her head. “Uncle Tim is working and I’ll be busy with your Grandma. Don’t look so worried! It’s a beautiful time of year to see the village. You’ll be okay.” CHECK IN 1. Summarize What two things does Kiki’s mom want her to do? 2. Make inferences Why does Kiki’s mom want her to do these things? UNIT 3 Kiki’s Journey 93 UNIT 3 / READING
