UNIT X UNIT 3 | 91 Reading • Use new vocabulary Have students locate the words in highlighted in yellow on page 91. (blushed, hummed, outline) Ask: What does it mean to blush? What would make you blush? Why does Kiki’s mother blush? (because of her father’s singing). Continue in the same way for hummed and outline. Point out that good readers understand the different meanings of new words they learn to better understand what they read. • Identify descriptive language Direct students’ attention to the descriptions in the text. Write the line from the song on the board, Beautiful as a mountain flower. Remind students of the literary devices they already know. Ask: Is this a metaphor or a simile? (simile) Say: A simile makes a comparison using words such as like or as. Call on a volunteer to read aloud what Kiki writes about the desert in the last sentence, the dust of the desert curled in clouds. Ask students if they can visualize this scene and if they think it’s a good description. • Make predictions Remind students that making predictions and reading on to confirm or revise their predictions is a strategy that good readers use to better understand text. Have students make predictions about Kiki’s Journey. For example, ask: What do you think Kiki will do at the Pueblo? Who might she meet? • Check In Ask and answer text-based questions Have pairs ask each other the questions and reread pages 90–91 to find the answers. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. Her mother’s advice is they should think about a good way to tell people how Kiki feels. 2. He plays Pow Wow music so that Kiki feels connected to her roots. PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Pair students who are developing reading fluency with those who are more fluent. Direct more fluent readers to read a paragraph aloud first. Then developing readers should imitate their peers’ pronunciation, intonation, and pace. Amplify Provide access to additional information about life on a reservation. Ask students to compare two ways of living: life on a reservation and in a city in California. Students can share their opinions as to where they would prefer to live and justify their answers. GLOSSARY tape A week later, for my spring break, my family left for Taos. I had only been to the Pueblo once, when I was a baby, and I couldn’t remember a thing about the place. Our drive lasted two days, through the Arizona desert and into New Mexico. My dad played old tapes of Pow Wow music. He turned to my mother and sang along: “You are my love, way ya heah haya, Beautiful as a mountain flower The beautiful mountain flower Waya ha waya hayaaa...” My mother blushed as I smiled and hummed along. Eventually I could see the outline of the Pueblo against the horizon, as the dust of the desert curled in clouds behind our truck. CHECK IN 1. Problem and solution What advice does Kiki’s mother give her? 2. Make inferences Why do you think Kiki’s dad plays Pow Wow music on their journey? 91 UNIT 3 Kiki’s Journey UNIT 3 / READING
