What other realistic fiction have we read? What do we know about realistic fiction? (It is a story that is made up, but the events could happen in real life.) Read the remaining descriptors aloud and ensure students are familiar with the terms realistic, characters, and believable. • Discuss author’s purpose Ask students to think about why an author might write realistic fiction. Guide students to understand that an author can use this genre to write stories that real people can identify with and learn from. Say: Sometimes it is hard to relate to characters in fantasy stories or stories that take place in an unfamiliar place and time. Realistic fiction gives us stories and characters we can understand and relate to. Preview • Learn new expressions Read the title aloud and point out the illustration of Kiki and the other students. • Use prior knowledge Ask students to name the Native American tribes they know. Elicit additional information. • Use illustrations to make a prediction Have students discuss the pictures, paying special attention to the expressions on the people’s faces and their actions.
