Project | 83H UNIT 3 Project Tree of Influence In this project, students will create a visual representation of the people and relationships that have had the most influence on them in becoming the person they are. · Who has had an effect on you? · Who has helped shape your thoughts, behavior, opinions, talents? Have a class discussion for students to answer the questions. Encourage students to think about family, friends, teachers, and coaches. Add additional categories to the anchor chart, as needed. House student answers on the anchor chart in the appropriate categories. Display the chart so students can refer to it as they work on their project. Explain to students that they are going to create a Tree of Influence. Tell them that their diagram should look like a tree, with each main branch representing a specific category. For example, one main branch represents family, with immediate family members placed closer to the trunk and extended family positioned on smaller branches. Other main branches can represent friends, teachers, or other people. Each individual should have their own box on the chart that includes their name and their relationship to the student. Tell students to use their creativity as they make their Tree of Influence. Suggest they make their tree eye-catching and unique by drawing a sketch with colored pencils or watercolors. They can use paper cutouts for the boxes. Tell students not to forget to use and show the roots of their trees. Brainstorm with the class some ideas of what the roots should represent, for example the student’s family name or a concept that makes them who they are.
