Homophones Understand homophones Read aloud the definition of homophones on Practice Book page 48. Ask: Do you know any words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have a different meaning? Elicit examples from the class. Write the words to, too, and two on the board. Have students read them chorally. Elicit the different meanings A • Identify homophones Draw students’ attention to the example picture in Activity A on Practice Book page 48. Elicit the word. Call on a volunteer to spell the correct homophone aloud. (rain) • Read the directions aloud. Have students work independently to complete the activity. Call on volunteers to share their answers and spell them for the class to correct their work. ANSWERS 1. knot, 2. mail, 3. deer, 4. flower, 5. berry, 6. tail B • Identify homophones in context Draw students’ attention to the example sentence in Activity B on Practice Book page 48. Elicit the word. Call on a volunteer to read the sentence aloud. Have them identify the two different words (something we walk on, when someone looks at us). Have them spell the correct homophone aloud. (stairs) • Read the directions aloud. Have students work independently to complete the activity. Call on volunteers to read aloud each sentence and spell the correct homophone for the class to correct their work. ANSWERS 1. son, 2. hair, 3. night, 4. way, 5. feet C • Use homophones in a complete sentence Draw students’ attention to Activity C on Practice Book page 49. Have students echo read the words in the box with you. Then call out each word and tell students to spell them chorally. Write the example sentence on the board: The knight rode in on his horse. Elicit the homophone for the word knight. • Have students write their sentences independently. Then have them exchange their work with a partner to peer check it. Call on volunteers to share their sentences with the class. ANSWERS Student’s sentences should be complete, grammatically correct, and include a homophone from the word box. D • Identify homophone pairs Draw students’ attention to Activity D on Practice Book page 49. Chorally read the words in the box. Call on a volunteer to read and spell the example homophone pair aloud. • Chorally read the list of words in the chart with the class. Have students complete the activity independently. Check answers as a class. Call on volunteers to read each homophone pair. Chorally spell each answer.
