UNIT X UNIT 2 | 61 Oral Language: Make Inferences Language Frames Identify inference words Have students identify the inference words in the language frames. Remind them of the two images and how they used facts about one world wonder to infer about another natural wonder. A Use a graphic organizer On the board, draw a chart with three headings: Facts from photo or text, What I know, and What I infer. Students copy the chart into their books. In pairs, students use their facts about the world wonders to complete the chart. To check students’ answers, they complete the chart on the board. Using this information, students answer the questions. ANSWERS Sample answer: The photo is in Manhattan, in New York City. I see the Sun setting directly between two buildings at the end of a street. A lot of people are standing outside to see it. I think it must be an unusual event. People might not see this happen very often. It probably happens because the streets are lined up with the sunset on certain days of the year. B Use facts to make inferences Have students form groups of three and draw charts with three headings: Facts from photo or text, What I know, and What I infer. They read the caption and use the language frames with inference words to complete the chart. Then students talk in their groups about the world wonder in the photo, making inferences about what they see. ANSWERS Sample answer: I see nighttime, snow, and pine trees. I think this is in a very cold place. The sky is bright green and blue. It might be the Northern Lights. The lights are probably visible because the air is clear and there isn’t a lot of light pollution from cities. Practice Book p. 32 Assessment Program p. 24 EXPLORE AND LEARN FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Work with students in a small group to guide them through the inference process by completing the inference chart with the facts. Then have students use their notes to complete the activities. Amplify Have students write their inference sentences for Activity B. Write: Make inferences Look at the picture of the Ifugao Rice Terraces. Write: (1) Facts from photo or text, (2) What I know, and (3) What I infer. Present your inferences to your partner. PRACTICE COMMUNICATE Oral Language Make Inferences A Describe the photo of Manhattanhenge. Where is it? What do you see? What’s happening? Use the information you see and what you know to give facts and make inferences. B Describe this photo of the Northern Lights. Use the text and what you know to give facts and make inferences. I think that this place is Alaska because . . . The lights might happen because . . . The lights in the sky are green and bright. I think these are . . . The Northern Lights are bright colors in the sky. They happen when particles come from the Sun and hit the atmosphere. You can see them near the North and South poles.
