UNIT X 58 | UNIT 2 COMMUNICATE Instructional Routine: After You Read p. Txxvi Apply the Reading Strategy: Make Inferences • Use visuals to support comprehension Have students look at the pictures. For each picture, ask: What can you remember about this wonder? How was it formed? Why was it formed? What is mysterious about it? • Use notes to answer questions Ask students to use clues and the facts in their notebooks to answer the questions. A Ask and answer Have students work in pairs to discuss their answers using information from the reading. Have students take notes. ANSWERS Sample answers: Stonehenge: Archeologists think people rolled stones on tree trunks or found a way to float them on the river. Standing Stones: I think people rolled the stones the same way they did to make Stonehenge. Stone Spheres: They were carved with stone tools and fire. Rice Terraces: People used their hands to form the terraces from stone and mud. B Use a graphic organizer Have students complete the graphic organizer in their noteboooks independently. ANSWERS Sample answers: Standing Stones—facts: near a trade route; I know: people from different countries used trade routes; I infer: people used landmarks to help them find their way; Stone Spheres—facts: may have been a symbol of the Sun and Moon; I know: many cultures observed the Sun and Moon; I infer: people felt that the Sun and Moon were very important; Rice Terraces—facts: people might have planted taro before they planted rice; I know: rice is eaten worldwide today; I infer: Taro became less popular than rice. C Exchange information Have students work in pairs to describe their graphic organizer to one another. D Use information Have students use the information in their charts to complete the activity. ANSWERS Sample answers: They might have used Stonehenge to know when to start planting seeds. They might have put the Standing Stones up so they would be visible from far away. They might have used the Stone Spheres in ceremonies. Rice might have earned farmers more money than taro in Ifugao. EXPLORE AND LEARN PRACTICE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Let students write and practice their sentences in Activity D first before presenting to a partner. Then their partner can help them with their syntax and organization of ideas. Amplify Students can read their sentences for Activity D to the class. Have them rehearse prior to presenting, focusing on skills such as making eye contact and speaking with appropriate volume and pacing. Talk and write: Secrets of the Ancient World List and describe three human-made world wonders. Apply the Reading Strategy Make Inferences A How did people make each wonder from Secrets of the Ancient World? Discuss with a classmate. B Use a chart to make inferences. List at least one fact for each ancient wonder from the reading. Then, write what you know based on the facts and what you can infer. C Tell a classmate about the inferences in your chart. D Write a sentence for each ancient wonder using the notes from your chart. Maybe they used . . . They might have used . . . They probably . . . facts from photo or text what I know what I infer The rocks at Stonehenge weigh 40 tons each. People can’t move heavy rocks by themselves. People probably made tools to move the rocks. AFTER YOU Read UNIT 2 58 UNIT 2 / AFTER YOU READ
