UNIT X 56 | UNIT 2 Reading • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Match oral to written words Play the audio for pages 56–57 and ask students to read along silently, tracking the print as needed. • Build fluency Play the audio again, then practice echo reading. Model smooth reading, pause, then have students reread chorally, imitating your pronunciation, intonation, and pacing. • Use visuals to support comprehension Have students look at the pictures. Ask: Is this wonder natural or human-made? (human-made) Note the similarities and differences between this rice terrace and Machu Picchu. (There are terraces in both Ifugao and Machu Picchu. Both are located in mountains. The Ifugao terraces are used to cultivate rice.) Why were the farms built on terraces? (to help with the flow of water to the crops) What do you like or dislike about this world wonder? • Visualize Ask students to identify words on page 56 that help them to visualize the world wonder. • Compare and contrast Have students find and underline facts that help them to compare and contrast the Ifugao Rice Terraces with modern rice terraces. (Similarity: Today, people farm the terraces in the same way; Difference: In the past, they made the terraces with their hands from stone and mud -- today, they use tools to help them) • Generate questions during reading Ask students if they have any questions about what they have learned so far. If they need prompting, provide an example, such as How does rice grow in water? Guide students to discuss their questions with each other and offer answers and ideas. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Remind students about how the town of Machu Picchu was built on steps or terraces. This world wonder is similar. Work with students in a small group to help them compare and contrast the Machu Picchu and Ifugao terraces by underlining the facts. Then have students use their notes and gesturing or mime. Students can retell what they have learned to a partner. Amplify Students can write a short diary entry on what it would feel like to visit one of these world wonders. Ask them to use the vocabulary from the lesson. Ifugao Rice Terraces The Ifugao Rice Terraces are in the Philippines. They are at the bottom of a mountain range. They spread across 4,000 miles. The Ifugao people created the terraces about 2,000 years ago. They still use them today. The terraces are like large steps. People didn’t use tools to make the terraces in the past. They made them with their hands from stone and mud. They planted rice on the terraces. They created a system to water the rice with rain from the forests above. Today, people farm the terraces in the same way, but they use tools to help them. Reading UNIT 2 Secrets of the Ancient World 56 UNIT 52 / CREOANDNINECGT TO THE THEME
