UNIT X 46 | UNIT 2 Instructional Routine: Vocabulary p. Txxiii Vocabulary in Context • Preview vocabulary Remind students of the vocabulary strategies they have learned, such as Use Visuals, Word Webs, and Personalize Vocabulary. Have students preview new vocabulary by pointing out the terms and matching images. Ask: Which of these words do you know? Call on volunteers to share responses. • Use illustrations to clarify word meanings Have volunteers read the example sentences and discuss the images to aid comprehension. Ask: How can the sentences and pictures help you understand new words? Use the vocabulary routine to teach any unfamiliar words. • Play a vocabulary game One student acts out a word without speaking and the other students have to guess what it is. The student who guesses correctly takes the next turn to act out a word. • Use word forms Explain to students that some words have multiple forms. We can use them as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. If students have identified words they are familiar with, elicit or introduce them to the other forms these words have. (mystery-mysterious; archeologistarcheology; sphere-spherical; symbol-symbolizesymbolical) Create a chart on the board to organize the words and their different forms. Write the headings: nouns, verbs, nouns and verbs, adjectives. Remind students that some words do not change their form but can be used as nouns and verbs. (nouns: mystery, weight, archeologist, archeology, column, sphere, diameter, symbol; verbs: weighs, symbolize; nouns and verbs: structure, position; adjective: mysterious, spherical, symbolic) EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students draw pictures of the vocabulary items on small pieces of paper. Working in pairs, they combine their pictures, turn them all face down on the desk, and mix them up. Students take turns choosing two pieces of paper. If the pictures are the same and they can identify the object, the student gets to keep the pictures. If not, another student takes their turn. Amplify Have students use new terms in written paragraphs about a world wonder. Display a model paragraph with the new terms underlined: The archeologist found a mysterious structure with columns positioned inside. symbol A checkmark is a symbol that means “correct.” diameter Diameter is the distance from one side of a circle to the other, going through the center. sphere Earth is a round, solid sphere. position The red balloon is in a different position. column These columns are very tall. archeologist An archeologist studies the past. weigh The fruit weighs less than five pounds. mystery Scientists do not know why these trees are bent.
