Project | 43H UNIT 2 Suggestions UNIT 2 Project Wonders of the World Collage In this project, students apply what they learned about drawing three-dimensional shapes in How to Draw a Bridge and create a collage to accompany their informational writing piece about a natural or manmade place in the world. Students use the photos or drawings they found or created during the publishing stage of the writing process as a reference. With a pencil and ruler, students draw a simple sketch of their wonder of the world considering length, width, and depth, as learned in the art project in this unit, on a piece of white 9 x 12 construction paper. Once the simple sketch is complete, students decide what color each section of their drawing should be and “fill in” each section with color using paint, colored pencils, crayons, or by gluing on torn scraps of construction paper, newspaper, or magazine pages. Provide a model for students. For example, if Stonehenge was the topic of a student’s informational writing, they might draw a grassline and large varied- shaped stones. They could use a blue watercolor to paint the sky, while small, torn scraps of brown construction paper might be glued to fill one stone and small, torn scraps of newspaper might be glued to fill another stone. Show students how to use various materials and many layers to fill shapes and completely cover their drawing to complete their collage. Mount the finished collage side-by-side with the student’s informational writing piece. Collages can be displayed in the classroom, on a hallway bulletin board, or in the school library.
