Sh sounds: ti, si, ci Identify the spelling of the sh sound Write the phonemes sh, ti, si, and ci on the board. Make the gesture for silence (put a finger to your lips and say shh). Have students repeat the sh sound. Say: All these letters make the sh sound. Point to each phoneme and elicit the sh sound from students. Explain that si sometimes makes the sound /zh/, as in television, decision, and occasion. A • Identify the sh sound in -tion words Draw students’ attention to Activity A on Practice Book page 26. Read the directions aloud. Then read the example sentence. Have students repeat it chorally. Ask: Which word has the sh sound? (relation) • Have students work independently to complete the activity. Call on volunteers to share their answers and spell the -tion words aloud. Have students chorally read the words in the box. Read the text aloud, pausing at each blank. D • Identify the meaning of -cian Explain to students that –cian means that a person has a certain skill or can do something. Write magic + cian = magician on the board. Say: A magician is someone who can do magic.
