UNIT X UNIT 1 | 39 Plan • Analyze the Student Model Discuss the annotated story map, then create a blank one on the board. Analyze the Student Model and ask volunteers to identify what information to write in each section of the story map. • Brainstorm topics and use a story map Give students time to brainstorm ideas. Then direct students to copy the story map. Assist them as they plan their writing. Create your own story map for the Draft exercise. Draft • Express ideas in writing On the board, model using your story map to draft a narrative text. Have students work on their drafts independently. • Use the draft checklist Read the draft checklist aloud. Call on volunteers to share the elements of their story. (the historical setting, the actions influenced by the setting, the events influenced by the setting) Revise A Use a revision checklist Read the revision checklist aloud and apply it to the Student Model together. Then have students use the checklist with their own drafts. Students can swap with their partners to check. B Peer assess Provide language to express constructive feedback. Say: First, say something the writer did well. Then ask questions or give suggestions. C Revise a draft Have students use their own checklists and feedback from peers to revise their writing. Then assist students as they apply it to their own writing. PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Assist students with lower proficiency with drafting their narrative texts. Provide language frames for each element. Model how to use the frames to draft a paragraph. This story takes place in ______. Because of ______ the characters had to __________ after these things happened ________. Amplify Have students with greater proficiency add more relevant details to their narrative texts. They may wish to research the historical event. Plan • Use a story map to brainstorm ideas for your narrative. Write notes. Draft • Use the ideas from your story map to write a draft.
