Describe the painting and support your answer by referring to colors and contrast. Instructional Routine: Art p. Txxxiv Capturing Weather in Art A • Build background knowledge Display examples of different types of paintings showing weather. Ask: What do you notice about these paintings? How do they express the different weather elements? Are there examples of severe weather? • Learn content vocabulary Play the audio for students. Write landscape on the board and ask if parts of the word are familiar. Draw a line to separate land from scape. Remind students that the suffix –scape means a view. Ask: How does the artist use the landscape to show the weather? What do you notice about the colors? How does he use contrast? What other elements does he use in his paintings? • Listen actively Point out the words in bold type and assess whether they are familiar to students. Then replay the audio as students follow along in a whisper read. Have students reread the text in pairs. Remind them to use context to help them understand the words in bold type. • Use content vocabulary Have students describe what they see in the painting. Supply vocabulary if necessary. B Identify a sequence Ask a volunteer to read the instructions and choral read the steps. Students can look through the pictures in this unit and choose a weather event to use as a model. Then direct students to follow the steps to create their landscapes. Provide an area for students to display their landscape drawings and where they can view their classmates’ art as well. C Use academic language to share ideas Have two students with greater proficiency demonstrate sharing and discussing paintings. Then arrange students for a fishbowl activity and have them share and discuss their paintings. Check in with students and supply vocabulary. Essential Question: How do paintings make us feel? Have students discuss the Essential Question in groups. Ask them to share what their classmates’ paintings make them experience. As the lesson progresses, remind students to refer to the vocabulary. Amplify Ask students to generate artist statements to accompany their paintings of weather events. He paints many landscapes of New Mexico. He focuses on the experience of living in the area. He uses vivid colors. Many of Abeyta’s paintings show the light on Earth and in the sky. He often paints scenes with extreme weather. His images show there is power in everyone and everything. In Village Storm, Abeyta uses contrast to show the power of a storm.
