Where and what did Octavio Paz study? 2. What is El laberinto de la soledad and what does it deal with? 3. What type of literature did Paz prefer, and why? Antes de ver • Read through the Vocabulario útil with students. Explain that ¿Qué (carrera) estudias? is a common way of asking someone’s major (especialización) . Also explain that tienes means to have and tener... años means to be... years old . • Assure students that they do not need to understand every Spanish word they hear in the video. Tell them to rely on visual cues and to listen for cognates and words from Vocabulario útil . Preparación Have students write down the answers in Spanish using complete sentences. Then, using words and phrases from Vocabulario útil and Contextos , have them interview a partner. Ask a few volunteers to report their findings. Emparejar Ask students to share their impressions of the UNAM . Have them name some advantages and disadvantages of studying at such a large university. Adelante 73 TEACHING OPTIONS Extra Practice Tell students to imagine that their family is moving to Mexico City and they will be transfer students at the UNAM . Have them research their major at the UNAM and write about the department, requirements, length of the program, etc. Then have them compare this information to their experience at their own university and share the differences with the class. Extra Practice Ask students to research one of the alumni mentioned in the video (other than Octavio Paz) and prepare a brief report. If possible, have them bring in a photo of the person. Have a few volunteers present their reports to the class. After each presentation, have the presenter play the role of the famous person. Encourage the class to ask the student questions about his or her likes, dislikes, and activities. Los estudios 1 2 3 Mexican author and diplomat Octavio Paz (March 31, 1914–April 19, 1998) studied both law and literature at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( UNAM ), but after graduating he immersed himself in the art of writing. An incredibly prolific writer of poetry and essays, Paz solidified his prestige as Mexico’s preeminent author with his 1950 book El laberinto de la soledad , a fundamental study of Mexican identity. Among the many awards he received in his lifetime are the Premio Miguel de Cervantes (1981) and Nobel Prize for Literature (1990). Paz foremost considered himself a poet and affirmed that poetry constitutes “ la religión secreta de la edad° moderna ”.
