Section Goals In Estructura 2.3 , students will be introduced to: • the present tense of estar • contrasts between ser and estar • prepositions of location used with estar KEY STANDARDS Communication Interpersonal Communication (Activity 4, 5, 6); Interpretive Communication (Activity 3, 5); Presentational Communication (Activity 5) Teaching Tips • Point out that only the yo and nosotros/as forms do not have a written accent. • Emphasize that the principal distinction between estar and ser is that estar is generally used to express temporary conditions ( Juan Carlos está enfermo hoy ) and ser is generally used to express inherent qualities ( Juan Carlos es inteligente ). • Present a chart similar to the one in Compare & Contrast , but create sample sentences using the names of your students and information about them. • Students will learn to compare ser and estar formally in Estructura 5.3 . Estructura 59 TEACHING OPTIONS TPR Have students write ser and estar on separate sheets of paper. Give statements in English and have students indicate if they would use ser or estar in each by holding up the appropriate paper. Ex: I’m at home . ( estar ) I’m a student. ( ser ) I’m tired. ( estar ) I’m glad. ( estar ) I’m generous. ( ser ) Extra Practice Ask students to tell where certain people are or probably are at this moment. Ex: ¿Dónde estás? (Estoy en la clase.) ¿Dónde está el presidente? (Está en Washington, D.C.) Heritage Speakers Ask heritage speakers to name instances where either ser or estar may be used. They may point out more advanced uses, such as with certain adjectives: Es aburrido vs. Está aburrido . This may help to compare and contrast inherent qualities and temporary conditions. 59 cincuenta y nueve Present tense of estar ANTETODO In Lección 1 , you learned how to conjugate and use the verb ser ( to be ). You will now learn a second verb which means to be , the verb estar . Although estar ends in -ar , it does not follow the pattern of regular -ar verbs. The yo form ( estoy ) is irregular. Also, all forms have an accented á except the yo and nosotros/as forms.
