Contextos Expansion activities offer suggestions for more complex communication. Pair and group activities engage students as they collaborate and build fluency, while individual activities extend application. Teaching Tips provide suggestions for how to enhance the vocabulary presentation. Ideas include asking personalized questions and emphasizing cognates to build connections to language students already know. Emparejar is a low-stakes matching activity that provides students with a cumulative review of lesson vocabulary. This innovative technology increases student awareness of pronunciation through low-stakes production practice. (Students learned mañana in Lección 1. ) —Mañana es ____. —¿Cuándo es la prueba? —Es el ____. Then ask students to answer these questions. • Explain that Monday is considered the first day of the week in the Spanish-speaking world and usually appears as such on calendars. Online Class Tip Use the Forums tool to facilitate an asynchronous discussion about everyone's schedule for the current week. Provide an initial post with your schedule as a sample. Be sure to model useful vocabulary and/or phrases for students to use. Ask students to post their schedule for the week and to comment on their classmates' posts. 6 Expansion To challenge students, ask them questions such as: Mañana es viernes… ¿qué día fue ayer? (miércoles); Ayer fue domingo… ¿qué día es mañana? (martes) 7 Teaching Tip To simplify, before doing this activity, have students review the numbers 0–30 on page 16, the present tense of ser on page 20, and telling time on page 24. TEACHING OPTIONS Extra Practice Have students prepare a day-planner for the upcoming week. Tell them to list each day of the week and the things they expect to do each day, including classes, homework, tests, appointments, and social events. Provide unfamiliar vocabulary as needed. Tell them to include the time each activity takes place. Have them exchange their day-planners with a partner and check each other’s work for accuracy. Game Have groups of five or six play a “word-chain” game in which the first group member says a word in Spanish (e.g., estudiante ). The next student has to say a word that begins with the last letter of the first person’s word (e.g., español ). If a student cannot think of a word, he or she is eliminated and it is the next student’s turn.
