PERSPECTIVES - PROGRAM SAMPLER
Perspectives : A Cultural Approach Designed with the contemporary Intermediate French classroom in mind, Vista Higher Learning’s new PERSPECTIVES program invites your students to make meaningful connections with diverse cultural practices, products, and perspectives. Students continue to develop the sociolinguistic skills essential to lifelong learning while fostering the intercultural understanding indispensable to today’s increasingly interconnected global citizen. Every section of every lesson of PERSPECTIVES aligns with the principles of the ACTFL 21 st -century classroom. Today’s language classroom can adhere to these principles only if students interact with the perspectives of other cultures by examining them through the filter of their own culture. Furthermore, for students to develop meaningful global competence when learning a language, they need to be at the center of the approach and, thus, active participants in their own experience. In PERSPECTIVES , a broad range of activities develops communicative competence and challenges students to think critically through personalized, real-world tasks that help them build intercultural competence with self, community, and world perspectives. These activities build on one another with a unique emphasis on exposing students to authentic content of diverse genres such as Documentaire films, informational articles and literature, and audio, thereby inspiring them to communicate in French through the perspectives of native speakers. PERSPECTIVES activities emphasize all modes of communication, including intercultural communication, throughout each lesson. Students discover multiple ways of expressing themselves both orally and in writing. They improve their ability to convey meaning through a consistent pattern of activities that stress personalization, intercultural exploration, and vocabulary and grammar support. Furthermore, scaffolded activities prepare students to interact with authentic video, text, and audio as well as allow for varied analysis and discussion after the interaction. Therefore, the activities serve as a bridge for students to access content and create habitual strategies for developing biliteracy skills. PERSPECTIVES gives students the tools to attain the global classroom objectives of exploring diverse cultural perspectives by reflecting on their related practices and products. In the process, students improve their French proficiency while becoming lifelong learners and global citizens. IAE-5 3
