PROTAGONISTAS - PROGRAM SAMPLER

IAE-5 Getting to Know PROTAGONISTAS Developed in Spain and adapted for use in the North American college market, Protagonistas, Third Edition , takes a unique approach to beginning Spanish. The program is explicitly driven by the goal of cultivating students’ intercultural communication skills. Each lesson introduces students to a protagonista, an individual from the Spanish-speaking world; the protagonista is the basis for exploring aspects of culture and daily life, all the while modeling language. This fresh approach imparts cultural and linguistic information to students not as ends in and of themselves, but as the means to an end: communication. At the same time, because of its immediacy, relevance, and authenticity, the Protagonistas approach keeps the goal of intercultural communicative competence in clear view. Protagonistas’ approach to the linguistic aspects of interaction is both communicative and functional-notional. This accessible text emphasizes task-driven communication within meaningful, pragmatic contexts of everyday life. The four skills are taught through a series of short, interactive activities. Protagonistas offers several features that make it truly different: • Culture is much more than an add-on, a sidebar, or even an “integrated component.” In Protagonistas , cultural awareness is the medium through which new vocabulary and grammar are presented and practiced. This unique approach allows students to develop both the linguistic and interpersonal skills that they will need to communicate effectively with Spanish speakers from many parts of the world. • Vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented through multiple contact points, from immediate, hands-on examples to complete and contextualized explanations. • Protagonistas also incorporates graphic design—page layout, use of colors, typefaces, and other graphic elements—as an integral part of the learning process. • Engaging graphics model and guide students’ communication throughout the book, helping them become aware of, comprehend, and use language structures in a hands-on way. NEW! to the Third Edition • Two new Latin American protagonists to increase cultural variety and content authenticity • Two new readings, including one cultural article and one literary piece • Audio-synced, dramatic reading of the Avance Lectura texts • More impactful unit opener, including each lesson’s Communicative Goals and comprehensive table of contents • Improved activity sequence to better reflect functional-notional approach • Significant reduction of vocabulary to ensure only active words and expressions are used • Tarea final activities adapted to Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology • Yo puedo and Síntesis activities now also available on the Protagonistas Supersite S 1
