Build and Read VCe Words Use Phonics Routine 7 and the Word Building Cards to build word ladders. Have students follow along with their BLM Practice Letters. Display the letters for the word ripe . Tap and blend the word. Then have students manipulate their letter cards as you say: • Change i to o . What is the word? ( rope ) • Change p to b . What is the word? ( robe ) Continue the word ladder with rose, nose, note, not, hot, hop, hope. ✺ AMPLIFY Have partners work together to build their own word ladders and record the words in their notebooks. Word Sorts Have partners sort this week’s BLM Practice Words into categories for each vowel sound. After partners have finished sorting their cards, have pairs compare their sorts with other pairs of students and identify the differences. Word Skills Multisyllabic Words Display BLM 2.7 and use Phonics Routine 8 to lead students in choral reading the words in each column. Point to each word and have students read it in unison. Scoop under the first syllable of a word and prompt students to respond. Scoop under the second syllable and prompt students to respond. Then sweep under the whole word as students say it. High-Frequency Words Have partners combine high-frequency words from their BLM Practice Words and play a game of “Concentration.” Students shuffle the deck of cards and place cards facedown in four rows of five words. On his or her turn, the player turns over two cards and reads each one aloud. If the cards match, the player keeps them. If they do not match, the player turns them facedown. Then the turn ends. Players continue until all pairs of matching cards have been identified.
