Have small groups work together to prepare and deliver a dramatic reading of the book. Each student is assigned a page to read aloud. Remind students to think about their phrasing, and to read the words like they are speaking. ✦ SCAFFOLD Assign students to pages that have fewer words. Point out the punctuation and model saying sentences with exclamation marks. ✺ AMPLIFY Challenge students to add gestures and use facial expressions to bring the character’s words to life. Spelling VCe Words Have students play a game of “Write It toWin It.” Assign students to teams of four or another even number. If there is an odd person out, that person can call out the spelling words. Each team will share one write-on/wipe-off board. Set the timer to one minute. Then call out a spelling word and start the timer. Each person on a team should write the spelling word and pass the board and marker to the next person. When every teammember has written the word correctly, they should set down the board and raise their hands. The first team to write the word correctly every time wins the round. Daily Writing Dictate each sentence and have students write each one on a different line. • Can you take us to a nice place? • I made eggs on the stove. • I left a nice note on the page. Have students use the proofing marks on BLM 2.5 to proofread their work independently or with a partner. ✷ ASSESS AND RETEACH Assess Randomly point to three words on BLM 2.7 and have students read them aloud. Reteach Tell students that sometimes it helps to look for smaller words or word parts in long words. Have students search for the letter e in three of the words on BLM 2.7 and highlight it. Then guide them to mark all other vowels and the consonants between them. Next, have students look for VCe syllables and underline them. Finally, have them mark the syllable divisions.
