Display the letters for the word date . Tap and blend the word. Then have students manipulate their letter cards as you say: • Change d to g. What is the word? (gate) • Change t to v. What is the word? (gave) • Change g to c. What’s the word? (cave) Continue the word ladder with came, come, and home . Pause at come to remind students there are some words in which the magic e does not make the other vowel say its name. Word Skills Multisyllabic Words Use Phonics Routine 8 and BLM 2.7 to practice blending multisyllabic words. Tell students they are going to practice reading two-syllable words with the VCCV pattern. Model with the first word, picnic . • Scoop under the first syllable and say: /pik/. • Scoop under the second syllable and say: /nik/. • Sweep under the whole word and say: picnic . Tell students that some of the words have a magic e at the end. Model again with the word tadpole . Lead students in choral reading the words in each column. Scoop under the first syllable of a word and prompt students to respond. Scoop under the second syllable and prompt students to respond. Then sweep under the whole word as students say it. Assign Worktext Page 12 to be completed at workstations. ✦ SCAFFOLD Provide students with a copy of BLM 2.7 in advance. Have them work with a more proficient partner to label the vowels and consonants, identify the patterns, and mark the syllable divisions. Check that students have correctly marked the words. High-Frequency Words Have partners use timers and their high-frequency words from the BLM Practice Words set to practice reading the words quickly and accurately. One student holds up the cards in quick succession, placing any misread cards back in the stack. The goal is for the other student to read all the words as quickly as possible, then beat their own previous time.
