Have students take turns reading aloud a page as the group follows along. Remind them to chunk meaningful phrases together and avoid pauses in the middle of a phrase. Confirm Comprehension Ask literal questions such as these: • What is the girl waiting for? (for the plane to take off ) • What time did they get on the plane? (five o’clock) • How long have they been waiting? (an hour) ✦ SCAFFOLD Have students practice reading with the Audio Sync Decodable Readers before reading with the group. Encourage them to pay attention to the narrator’s phrasing, or where they pause between words. Spelling VCe Words Have partners play a game of “Spelling Bump.” First, each pair should create a “bump” card by writing bump on a blank BLM Card. Then the bump card is placed in a bag with the spelling words from one set of BLM Practice Words. Partners take turns pulling a word from the bag and spelling it aloud as their partner checks their spelling. If the bump card is pulled, all the cards go back in the bag and play continues. Daily Writing Have students write a paragraph about the girl in When Will We Take Off? Challenge students to include at least three spelling words in their writing. ✷ ASSESS AND RETEACH Assess Display the words reptile, basket, sunshine, and excuse . Have students read the words. Reteach If students struggle to read multisyllabic words, diagnose the problem by asking students to show you how they use the steps for syllable division to read the word. If students struggle to identify the two syllable types, closed and VCe, write a list of words with both patterns on index cards. Then cut the words in half where the syllable should be divided. Sort the word parts into two categories by syllable type. Then have students practice reading the syllable separately, then together as words. 21 WEEK 2 • DAY 3
