Review Long Vowels Use Phonics Routine 2 and the Sound-Spelling Cards a, e, i, o, u to review the long vowel sounds. Use the Word Building Cards to display the words go and globe . Have a volunteer identify which word is an open syllable and which is a VCe word. Use Phonics Routine 5 to model blending the words. Remind students that the magic e can jump over consonants and make the first vowel say its name. Then display these words and guide students to blend and read them: face, race, place, bake, snake, lake, pile, mile, cute. Assign Worktext Page 10 to be completed during independent workstations. Word Skills Review VCe Syllables Remind students that when they encounter words with more than one syllable, they should look for patterns and parts they know to determine how to divide the syllables. Display the words mistake and caveman . Show students how to identify the syllable patterns by first identifying the vowels and any magic e . Display invite and placement . Invite individual students to first identify the vowels, marking e by its name and other vowels with v . Invite students to use masking tape to “underline” VCe syllables and “cross out” the e’ s.
