Ask: What letter is at the end of this word? ( e ) What does that tell us about the vowel that comes before it? (It is a long vowel; it says its name.) • Tap the t and say: /t/. • With two fingers, tap a and e and say: /āāā/. • Tap the letter p and say: /p/. • Slide your finger under the whole word and say: tape. Lead students in blending these words: nice, race, cage, twice . Tap the letters and sweep as students say the sounds followed by the whole word. Be sure to tap the first vowel and e in unison with two fingers. ✺ AMPLIFY Display the Picture Cards lake, name, face, plane, fire, smoke . Have students use their BLM Practice Letters to build the word that names each picture. ✼ ENGLISH LEARNERS Language Transfer A VCe spelling pattern equivalent does not exist in many languages, including Spanish. Use the Word Building Cards to provide extra practice pronouncing these word pairs: at/ate, hop/hope, bit/bite, cub/cube. Word Skills Two-Syllable Words with CVCe Review the VCCV syllable pattern and the steps for labeling vowels and the consonants between them to find the pattern. Indicate the syllable division VC/CV. Have a volunteer read the word. Next display the word update . Have students suggest the vowel and consonant labels. Cover the first syllable and ask: What does the e at the end tell us about the vowel that comes before it? (It is a long vowel; it says its name.) The word is /up/ /dāāāt/. I update my calendar with new appointments. Explain: Some two-syllable words include a magic e in one or both syllables. The e is silent, so it does not form a new syllable. Remember to look for the vowel- consonant- e pattern. Display the word lakeside and indicate the syllable pattern and division. Say: When dividing syllables, the magic e should not be separated from the vowel that comes before it. Display these words: tadpole, basement. Guide students to identify the syllable patterns and division. up/date VC / CVCe lake/side VCe / CVCe t PHO23_WB_cards_Consonants.indd 89 07/07/2021 19:12 a PHO23_WB_cards_Vowels.indd 1 07/07/2021 19:11 p PHO23_WB_cards_Consonants.indd 61 07/07/2021 19:12 e PHO 3_WB_cards_Vowels.indd 15 07/07/2021 19:11 r PHO23_WB_cards_Consonants.indd 71 07/07/2021 19:12 a PHO23_WB_cards_Vowels.indd 1 07/07/2021 19:11 c PHO23_WB_cards_Consonants.indd 9 07/07/2021 19:12 e PHO 3_WB_cards_Vowels.indd 15 07/07/2021 19:11 15 WEEK 2 • DAY 1
