Ser/estar with adjectives • Use ser + adjective when naming a characteristic that distinguishes the person or thing from other persons or things: El Museo de Arqueología Maya es impresionante. La artesanía maya es muy apreciada por los turistas. The Museumof Mayan Archeology is impressive (i.e., you are describing the museumas opposed to other museums). Mayan crafts are very appreciated by tourists (i.e., you are describing the crafts as opposed to other things tourists might like). • Use estar + adjective to describe a condition that distinguishes a person’s or thing’s current state from other possible states of itself . El museo está cerrado hoy. Estos artículos de artesanía están rebajados. The museum is closed today (i.e., the museum is usually open). These crafts are on sale (i.e., they were not on sale before). B. Ser/estar + location • As you learned in Chapter 3, Section 2, we use estar for the location of people, places, and things (See ¡Ojo! box): Las ruinas de Copán están en el oeste de Honduras. La casa de Moisés está cerca de la Farmacia Soler. The ruins of Copan are in western Honduras . Moisés’ house is close to Farmacia Soler . • Use ser for the location and time of events (not physical objects): La celebración del Solsticio de primavera es en el Templo Mayor a las 6 de la mañana. La fiesta de cumpleaños de Alexis es en la casa de Moisés. The Spring Solstice celebration takes place at the main temple at 6 in the morning . Alexis’ birthday party is at Moisés’ house . Uses of Ser and Estar Use ser ... Use estar... 1. With adjectives to describe a characteristic Las ruinas son impresionantes. The ruins are impressive . 1. With adjectives to describe a condition Las ruinas están abandonadas. The ruins are abandoned. 2. For location and time of events La celebración es en el Templo Mayor. The celebration takes place at the main temple. 2. For location of people, places and things Las ruinas están lejos de Tegucigalpa. The ruins are far from Tegucigalpa. 3. With nouns to define, identify or classify a person/object Las ruinas son el mejor reflejo de la cultura maya. The ruins are the best example of the Mayan culture . 3. With present participle to describe an action in progress Hoy Alexis está visitando las ruinas. Today Alexis is visiting the ruins. ¡OJO! Ser and estar As a verb of identification, we always use ser (never estar ) followed by a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun. Estoy estudiante. → Soy estudiante. Ella está la organizadora del tour → Ella es la organizadora del tour. La organizadora está ella → La organizadora es ella.
