Here are a few examples to help remind you: Verbs Present Indicative Present Subjunctive tener tengo tenga poner pongo ponga volver vuelvo vuelva cerrar cierro cierre conocer conozco conozca buscar busco busque entregar entrego entregue almorzar almuerzo almuerce escoger escojo escoja exigir exijo exija Different Verbs to Remember There are some verbs that do not use the yo form to create the subjunctive: With change in subject in s2 the verb will NOT be in subjunctive because subject 1 (s1) is certain/sure of what is happening to subject 2 (s2). When forming the present subjunctive, I use these simple steps: First, I find the dictionary form or the infinitive. Then I find the yo form in the present indicative. Thirdly, I find the opposite vowel ending and put it on the verb stem. So for -ir and -er verbs, that’s an ‘ a ’ and for -ar verbs that’s an e . So for example, for the verb tener , first I find the dictionary form, which is tener . Then, step 2, I find the yo form in the present indicative, which is tengo . And then, the third step, I add the opposite vowel ending, which in this case, because tener is an -er verb, you need an a . So that’d be tenga . Tener-tengo-tenga . If you use these three simple steps, you won’t get confused about the subjunctive. And remember, with more practice, things will get easier.
