Start planning your writing by brainstorming for a few minutes, writing down everything that comes to mind, or developing an idea map with subtopics and clusters of ideas. Now, choose the three or four most important ideas that you want to develop in your composition. Each idea should form the topic sentence of a paragraph. Remember to write appropriately for your purpose and reader. However, you will probably want to use a dictionary occasionally to stretch your communicative abilities. When you look up a word in the dictionary, be sure to note whether it is a noun or a verb. Using the example “I can fly to New York,” look up can and fly in the online dictionary www.wordreference.com, using the “English to Spanish” section, and write what you find: can noun = verb = fly noun = verb = What is the correct translation of “I can fly to New York”? Is all of the other information in the paragraph related to that main idea? Is the tone appropriate for the type of audience I have selected?
