Leçon 2B 2B.2 Telling time Point de départ Use the verb être with numbers to tell time. • There are two ways to ask what time it is. Quelle heure est-il? What time is it? Quelle heure avez-vous / as-tu? What time do you have? • To tell time on the hour, use [ number ] + heures . Use une heure for one o’clock. Il est six heures . Il est une heure . • Express time from the hour to the half-hour by stating the number of minutes it is past the hour. Il est quatre heures cinq . Il est onze heures vingt . • Use et quart to say that it is fifteen minutes past the hour. Il est sept heures et demie . • To tell time from the half hour to the hour, use moins ( minus ) and subtract the number of minutes or the portion of an hour from the next hour. Il est trois heures moins dix . Il est une heure moins le quart . • To say at what time something happens, use the preposition à . Céline travaille à sept heures moins vingt. Céline works at 6:40. On passe un examen à une heure . We take a test at one o’clock. Boîte à outils In English, you often leave out the word o’clock when telling time. You might say “The class starts at eleven” or “I arrive at seven.” In French, however, you must always include the word heure(s) .
