28 | Unit 1 UNIT 1 / PROJECT DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold If students do not like drawing, have them make a collage instead. For students in the silent period, pair them with a buddy who has the same home language. Allow the student to ask a friend to read his or her page aloud. Amplify Allow students to create a second page. Have them draw and write about things they like, such as school, recess, math, science, social studies, writing, and drawing. You may wish to have students who have higher English proficiency read the class book aloud in an echo read. The student reads a sentence aloud, and the rest of the class echoes it back. Instructional Routine p. Txxxi Class book Use this activity as a culminating project. The book does not need to be complicated, but it does need to include everyone. Have each student create their own page. Collect all the pages and staple the pages into a folder. Write Meet Our Class on the cover and ask a volunteer to illustrate it. Make sure to add your own page to the book with an illustration (i.e., My name is ____.) 1 • Draw to share ideas Provide students with paper that has lines for writing and space for a drawing. Ask students to draw a picture of themselves in the drawing space. • Communicate about familiar topics As students work, circulate around the room and ask them to talk about their drawings. Say : I see ____. • Label pictures Ask students to label their drawings with words they know, such as eyes , fingers , nose , and mouth . • Use sentence frames On the board, provide written sentences for students. Include: Hello! My name is ____ . I am a student. My friend is ____ . My teacher is ____ . Go over the sentences orally as a class. Allow students to decide which sentences to write on their page 2 • Collaborate on writing projects The content of each student’s page in the class book may overlap with his or her individual “All about me” writing assignments. If time is short, you may choose to collect the earlier writing assignments for the class book. • Share ideas Use the class book as a participatory read- aloud. Direct each student to stand near you as you hold the book for all students to see. Have the student read his or her page aloud. • Choral read Once students have read their pages aloud, choral read the whole book. • Home-school connection If possible, send a copy of the class book home with each student.
