(no) Challenge them to write a sentence for a classmate to respond to. Amplify Have students say what they want to learn about in social studies. Help students get ideas by showing pictures from grade-appropriate magazines and books. Provide the sentence starter: I know ____ . In social studies, I want to learn about ____. Divide a piece of paper into four quadrants with the labels geography , history , civics , and economics . Photocopy the images from the Student Book and cut them into separate pieces. Have students match the pictures with the words. If needed, provide a think-aloud. Check students’ understanding. The world around me 1 • Listen and repeat Point to each image as you read aloud the sentences and labels. Have students repeat. Ask for students to give examples of places, people from the past, ways to help, and money. • Use sentence frames Display the Student Book page, and underline the phrase I learn about in Activity 1. Read the four examples aloud. Clarify what places , the past , ways to help , and money mean. Point to Picture D to show money . To convey help , drop a mess of clips or pencils on the floor. Gesture to a student and say : Please help me . Use local place names to teach places . Say : ____ is a place. School is a place. [City] is a place . To explain the past , write the date on the board. Then write the previous year on the board, and ten years before that. Write yesterday’s date on the board. Gesture to all the dates and say : The past . Then, write on the board: I learn about ____. Have students work in pairs to complete the sentence. Have students with lower English proficiency copy the sentences from the Student Book. 2 Work through the example together. Write the names of the areas of social studies on the board. Have students repeat sentences after you. 3 On the board, write: In social studies, I learn about ____. • Use role-play to develop vocabulary Say : Now we will talk about economics . Write economics on the board. To a student, say : You have a pizza business. You make pizzas. You sell pizzas . To the whole class, ask : Who eats pizza? Give a volunteer some play money. Say : Go buy some pizza . After money and pizza exchange hands, ask : Who has the money? Who has the pizza? Have students continue to role-play. Say : Economics is how money moves between people and businesses . • Revisit the Essential Question Write the Essential Question on the board. Ask students to work with a classmate to list things related to social studies (maps, people, places, and so on). Then have them discuss the Essential Question in English or their home language. Ask them to share their ideas by finishing the sentence: In social studies, I learn about ____.
