Write the words on the board and have students work in pairs. Have one student cover the labels in the Student Book, point to each image, describe it, and have the classmate respond. Provide a model. For example, point to picture C and say : I see students. I see trash. I see students helping. What is it? (civics) Help students with pronunciation. Then, have students write labels for each image. Model saying the first sentence with students: Geography is part of social studies. In geography we learn about places and maps . Say: In social studies, we learn about the United States, and other countries. Tell me some country names. Confirm names of countries that students say. • Model using a graphic organizer On the board, draw a web and write social studies in the middle. As you talk about the four areas of social studies, add the words geography , history , civics , and economics to the web on the board. As you add each word, reinforce that it is a part of social studies. • Learn about geography Point to each detail in picture A as you say : I see oceans. I see mountains . Point to the map on page 25. Run your finger around state lines. Say : I see states. I see our state . Write geography in the web on the board. Say : Geography is part of social studies. Geography tells us about places . • Learn about history Point to picture B . Say : I see a pyramid. The pyramid is old . Point to the illustration of Martin Luther King, Jr., on page 25. Say : I see Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an American leader. He lived from 1929–1968 . Write history in the web. Say : History is part of social studies. History tells us about the past . • Learn about civics Point to picture C . Say : I see two students. They are picking up trash . Point to the photo of the elderly person on page 25. Say : I see a girl. The woman needs help walking. The girl helps the woman . Write civics in the web on the board. Say : Civics is part of social studies. In civics, we learn how to help . • Learn about economics Point to picture D . Say : I see money. The father and the girl put the money in the piggy bank . Write economics in the web on the board. Say : Economics is part of social studies. In economics, we learn about money . • Listen and repeat Point to each image while reading aloud the vocabulary. Have students repeat. • Match oral to written words Say the captions aloud, out of order, and have students point to the correct picture on the page. • Pre-teach Help students understand the concept of civic responsibility by helping in a community. Say : We live in [place name]. We have to take care of [place name] . Ask : How can I help? Say : I see a plastic bottle on the ground . Mime actions. Say: I can help. I throw trash on the ground?
