16 | Unit 1 UNIT 1 / CONNECT TO READING DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Ensure students understand the meaning of listen , teacher , work , seat , raise , hand , talk , and classmates . Help them with pronunciation and meaning. Have them create a set of personalized flashcards. On one side of each card, have them write the word. On the other side, have them write the word in their home language, draw a quick sketch, or write a definition. After some practice, have pairs use the cards to test each other’s memory. Then, call out one of these words and have students mime the action or point to the person or item. Amplify Have students work in pairs. Provide or have students create the following sentence strips: Listen to / your teacher. Work quietly / at your seat. / Raise your hand / to talk. Help / your classmates. Always be / polite. Do / your best . First, have students match the sentence parts to create the classroom rules in the Student Book. Then, challenge students to write new sentences using the sentence parts. Encourage students to refer back to the text. Instructional Routine p. Txxv Essential Question Why do we read? Read the Essential Question aloud, and write it on the board. Use body language to clarify meaning. Have students echo the question back to you and share their ideas about why they read. Then say : We read for fun . We read to learn. Today we will read to learn . Informational text Display a text that is clearly nonfiction, such as a science book. Ask : Does it give information? (yes) Say : It is an informational text . Have students repeat. Display another informational text, such as a cookbook. Ask : Informational? (yes) Then display a picture storybook. Ask : Informational? (no) Repeat with other signs and labels in the classroom, such as a fire drill procedure. READING STRATEGY: Read for information Say : When I read, I look for words that give information. Some words are very important . Turn back to the poem on the Unit Opener. Read aloud the poem. Say : The poem is about names . Point to the word name each place it appears. Say : I know that name is an important word. Look! It is used again and again. When I read, I look for important words . Classroom Rules • Activate prior knowledge Give students two minutes to look at the illustrations in the text. Then, have them tell what they see. Ask : What do you see? (boy, girl, student, teacher) Have students look at the text and identify words they know. Say : Underline the words you know. Model underlining a word. Students may identify teacher , your , and listen . • Pre-teach Explain what a rule is. Ask : What do we do in the classroom? Do we run? Mimic running. (no) We do not run in the classroom. That is a rule . Show a photo of a bicycle. Ask : Do we ride bicycles in the classroom? (no) That is a rule. We do not ride bicycles in the classroom . Ask : Do you know a rule? Elicit ideas from students. 1 Use the audio recording, or read aloud the selection. Follow the text with your finger as the words are read aloud. Use gestures and examples to ensure each student understands the rules. • Echo read Say : I will read a rule. Then you read . Follow the words with your finger as you read one rule. Then have students read, or repeat, before moving on. Include gestures while reading. • Answer questions Review each classroom rule as it relates to your classroom. Ask : Do we have the rule in our class? Yes or no? • Teacher modeling Return to the reading strategy. Say : I will look for important words . Read aloud the first sentence. Say : I think the important word is listen . Underline listen . Continue thinking aloud, and identify quietly , raise your hand , help , polite , and best as other important words.
