DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Amplify Share a photo showing students at school. Ask students who have greater English proficiency to talk about what they see in the photo. They may discuss clothing, where the students are, or what they are doing. Prompt students for more language using open-ended questions. Ask : What do you see? Where are they? How do they feel? How do you know? CONNECT TO THE THEME • Demonstrate close viewing Play the video. Play it again and pause the video to ask : What do you see? Listening to what students say will help you determine their prior knowledge. • Assess English proficiency Throughout the year, ask students to show their understanding by nodding or gesturing. As their English proficiency improves, prompt them to answer with spoken words by pointing to your ear. As students answer with words or phrases, create a gesture that prompts them to answer with a longer phrase or a sentence. Provide sentence frames to support longer sentences. Connect to the BIG Idea • Pre-teach Use gestures to communicate big and small . Use gestures to show what an idea is. Read aloud the BIG Idea: We meet new people at school . • Use pictures to develop vocabulary Show group photos of students and of staff or faculty. Gesture to indicate the whole group and say : People . Point to yourself and say : Person . Then, point to a student and ask : People? Gesture to the whole class, and ask : People? Use nodding and shaking for yes and no . • Express ideas Have students name people they meet at school. Model by saying : At school, I meet _____. Students may use actual names or group words, such as teachers , friends , etc. MY GOALS for this unit In this unit, students will use close viewing, active listening, oral language, reading, and writing to practice greetings, share about themselves, and learn about school. Match icons with ideas Explain subject areas and their corresponding icons. First, explain the subject area, by using pictures or textbooks. Then, teach the icon for the content area. Mime a person reading a book for Reading, display numbers and symbols for Math, borrow and share a microscope for Science, show a globe for Social Studies, and show a pencil for Writing. If possible, create cards showing the icons; when you show a card, have students say the corresponding subject area.
