DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold The silent period is common for newcomers. It is important that students are not pressured to speak or to use English immediately. They can wave hello and use their home language as an initial greeting. Have students draw to express themselves. Ask them to draw a greeting between themselves and a friend. Have them label the people in the drawing. If necessary, model the activity for students. Introduce the Theme: All About Me • Use gestures to develop vocabulary Welcome students. Say : Hi! and Hello! in an animated way, as you wave and smile in greeting. • Home-school connection Have students share how to say hello in their home language. Gesture toward a student you know speaks a specific language, such as Spanish. Say : Hi! Point to yourself. Then gesture toward him or her and say : ¡Hola! Repeat with other students, using their home languages. • Communicate information Say the name of the unit. Then point to yourself. Say : My name is ____ . I am the teacher. Poem: Hello, new friend! • Demonstrate active listening Play the audio and model listening. Play the audio again, and use your finger to follow the text. The third time through, echo read the text line by line, including the student names that appear on the name tags. • Match oral to written words Model writing your name using a complete sentence. Point to your name on the board and say : Name. My name is ____ . Point to a student and say : What is your name? Direct the student to answer using a complete sentence. Ask the student to write his or her name on the board. Write for the student, as needed. • Recognize meaning of words If there are two students with the same name in your class, use their names along with another student to teach same and different . Otherwise, use blocks, shapes, or colored paper to communicate the idea of same and different . • Use actions to develop vocabulary Invite an older student or an adult to your classroom to model a greeting with you. Shake hands and look each other in the eye. Then introduce that person to your students. Use gestures to indicate students should shake hands and look the visitor in the eye. Provide the oral sentence frame: Nice to meet you, [name]. • Cultural connection Have students work together if they share the same home language. Allow pairs to discuss and demonstrate how people greet one another in their home culture. Using gestures, ask about shaking hands and eye contact.
