Get Reading! Sail and Soar - PROGRAM SAMPLER

xii DURING READING Have students pay attention to the vocabulary words as they encounter them. As students are reading, remind them that they can learn more about the meanings of the bolded terms by looking at pictures, labels on the page, and the glossary at the end of the text. AFTER READING Once students have finished reading, have them go back to the text to locate key vocabulary and talk about the vocabulary terms to reinforce the depth of their word knowledge and build language proficiency. Examples of activities include: Level A • Help students to construct a simple definition for the term, and use the term in a new sentence. • Have students act out the meaning of the word in pairs or a small group. • Have students draw a picture to represent the term, and consider having them add the term to a classroom word wall if it is a term that will be used often in other content. Levels B and C • Have students add the term to a personal dictionary with an image, a definition in their own words, and a new sentence. • Alternatively, involve students in creating a vocabulary word wall with images, the definition of the term in their own words, and a new sentence using the word. • Assign each word to a pair or small group. Have the students act out the meaning of the word, and ask other groups to guess the word that is being acted out.
