xi AFTER READING Return to Predictions Discuss the predictions students made before reading. Compare how they align with what the text was actually about. Discuss the Text Have students discuss the text and their reactions or questions. When students respond, validate their ideas and recast the sentence if needed, repeating the sentence back to students in standardized English to provide a model while validating students’ ideas. Level A : Encourage students to flip through the book as they talk about key aspects of the text. Encourage students to incorporate key vocabulary. Level B : Consider providing sentence frames to help students use evidence to support their discussion points. For example: On page 6 of the book, it states that _______. Level C : Pose questions to engage students in discussing the book. Introduce the vocabulary and build students’ background knowledge while also helping students to talk about the text. For example: What did you like about this book? What does this book remind you of? Present their Understanding Have students present the book to their peers orally or in writing. Depending on students’ language proficiency and interest, students might select from activities, such as the following: • Poster: Create a series of pictures with captions that present key information from the text. • Plot Summary: Create a story map that presents the characters, setting, and events of the plot. • Performance: Perform a scene or key event in the story. Work in small groups or pairs, depending on the number of characters in the text. BUILDING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY In each reader, students encounter content-area vocabulary words that are bolded in the text and listed in the glossary at the end of the reader. For each reader, take time to build students’ vocabulary knowledge with multiple opportunities to hear, use, and discuss the term. Make sure students have multiple opportunities to relate the terms to prior knowledge and the reader. Possible activities include the following: BEFORE READING Introduce the vocabulary students will need (see teacher guide for lists for each reader). Define each term for students and ask them to share their experiences with the word or knowledge about what it means. Allow students to share the word in their home language if desired. Use the term multiple times and involve students in helping to create other sentences using the term. Consider adding a visual image, real object, or gesture to help reinforce the meaning of the term.
