Get Reading! Sail and Soar - PROGRAM SAMPLER

ix Teacher Guide Overview This Get Reading! Teacher Guide provides resources to support teachers using the Get Reading! Leveled Reading Library in the classroom. For each reader, this Teacher Guide contains: • Notes for the teacher about the reader, including directions about previewing the text and introducing specific vocabulary terms, along with teaching tips for during and after reading. • An Activity Sheet to develop comprehension and vocabulary that students can complete independently, in pairs, or in small groups. Activity Sheets are specific to Level A and Level B / C readers to allow for differentiation. • A quiz to assess students’ reading comprehension. Quizzes are specific to Level A and Level B / C readers to allow for differentiation. ABOUT THE READERS The Get Reading! readers are available in three levels: • Level A readers provide accessible texts about engaging and relevant topics for students at beginning stages of English learning. • Level B readers provide students with slightly more syntactic and lexical complexity at the developing stages of English learning. • Level C readers provide even more complex language as well as exposure to additional and more challenging content, including extra information boxes and a range of additional text types. USING THE SERIES The Get Reading! series is commonly used in three ways: • Library The library set allows students to choose a book at an appropriate level. Students can select which content area to choose, or you can assign students to read each of the content area books in each unit before moving on. • Small Group If you choose to purchase multiple sets, these resources can be used in small groups, allowing all students to have access to their own personal copy of a book. Small groups allow you to target key vocabulary and lead students in a discussion about the book, as well as provide immediate feedback as students read aloud. Students can complete the accompanying activity with you. • Differentiated Instruction These readers can also be used in whole-group or small-group settings with students reading the same story in Level A, Level B, or Level C. Readers are designed to cover the same content, with more complex vocabulary and grammar at higher levels, allowing students at multiple levels of language proficiency to read and discuss texts together. If you use these texts for differentiated instruction, consider pairing students who are reading the same book to read together or to check in and discuss aspects of the text with each other, as they will have similar texts to reference.
