Unit 1 | 25 UNIT 1 / CONNECT TO SOCIAL STUDIES The world around me 1 • Activate prior knowledge Draw a 3-column chart on the board. Write the heading People . Say: Let’s think about people. Show children many different images depicting people of all ages. Say: Children are people. Who else? Write boys , girls , teachers , and families in the chart. Write the heading Places . Ask: Where do people go? As children offer ideas, ask about different buildings, towns, countries, and so on. List some of the places on the board. Write the heading Activities . Ask: What activities do people do? Add examples offered by children. (work, play, exercise) Provide pictures to support activities . • Use a graphic organizer Have children draw a simple picture of a person, a place, or an activity. Help them label their drawings. Then have them post their drawings in the appropriate 3-column chart on the board. Review the 3-column chart with the pictures together. 2 • Use sentence frames Write a sentence frame on the board and have volunteers complete it first orally and then in writing: In social studies, we learn about ____. • Use domain-specific words Have children repeat sentences about social studies after you: In social studies class, we learn about people. In social studies, we learn about where people go. In social studies, we learn about what people do. • Develop vocabulary Use picture B to teach when. Using gestures ask: When? Ask a question that children are able to answer, such as: When is lunchtime? Using a calendar, ask another question your children know the answer to, such as: When does it get hot? Write the year on the board and say it aloud. Then point to the picture of the boat and ask: When? Point to the picture of the pyramid and ask: When? Say: In social studies, we ask questions about where and when. Have children repeat after you. 3 • Draw to share ideas Provide children with drawing paper that has writing lines at the bottom. Have them draw a picture to show what they learn in social studies. Then have children write or copy a sentence about their picture. • Revisit the Essential Question Write the Essential Question on the board. Ask children to work with a partner to list anything related to social studies (maps, people, places, and so on). Then have them discuss the Essential Question in English or their home language. Allow them to share their ideas.
