Show how to split the bean at the seam to show how the bean germinates into a sprout. Tell children to use newly acquired vocabulary to discuss the beans; e.g., The beans are seeds. They grow into a sprout and a new bean plant. Amplify Provide more information about how a bean germinates into a plant. Tell children that beans need warmth and moisture to form a sprout. Give each child a bean, a cotton ball, and a small plastic bag. Moisten the cotton ball and put it in the bag with the bean. The beans should sprout within a few days. Elicit a description of the boy’s age, clothing, etc. Say: This boy changes. How do you think he changes? Does he turn green? Talk about the difference between external changes that people can see and internal changes that people cannot see. • Predict Ask children to make predictions about how the boy will change, on the inside or physically.
