Ask children to think about and answer the Essential Question. Offer prompts as needed. ANSWERS Sample answers: Rain helps plants grow. Rain gives us water to drink. Rain cools hot weather. • Recognize characteristics of informational text Tell children they will read an informational text about rain. Ask: What is the text probably about? Lead children to answer that the text will have facts, details, and true information about rain. If they need prompting, ask yes/ no questions, such as: Is an informational text a madeup story? (no) Is it true information? (yes) Why do we read informational texts? (to learn) A • Listen actively Play the audio of the text as children follow along. Tell children to move their finger or pencil across the words as they hear them. • Academic vocabulary Ask children to read the text silently and write down any words they don’t know. Tell them to compare words with a classmate and try to help each other understand the words. Monitor for words that children cannot explain to each other to present to the class. Use the vocabulary routine for helpful and harmful and any other words the class needs to understand the text. • Reading fluency Do a reader’s choir as the second oral read-through of the text. EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Gather children in small groups to assist with comprehension of the reading. Note that some phrases may need explanation, such as without rain and too much rain. Model with a cup of water. Show an empty glass and say: without water. Show an overflowing glass and say: Too much water! Amplify Ask children to connect ideas. Earlier in the unit, they discussed rain and what they like to do on rainy days. They also discussed rain and plants. Write the language frame on the board: When it rains, I ___. When it rains, plants ___. When it doesn’t rain, I ___. When it doesn’t rain, plants ___. But too much rain is also a problem. Too much rain causes floods. Floods hurt people and animals.
