UNIT X 190 | UNIT 5 Instructional Routine: Science p. Txxxi Identify topics Show children a picture of a scientist conducting an experiment or looking into a microscope. Have them share what they think the scientist is doing. Ask: What do scientists do? Make a list of their responses on the board. Scientists in Action A • Academic vocabulary Read the title. Ask: What does find out mean? If children need prompting, provide usage examples, such as What’s for lunch? Point to the lunch menu and say: Let’s find out. Guide children to understand that find out means discover or learn. • Culture note Note that in Spanish, the word miro means look and aprendo means learn. Confirm that children understand Dr. means Doctor. Explain that scientists can be doctors, but they are different from medical doctors. • Build backgroundAsk: What do scientists do to find out about something? If necessary, refer them back to the Unit 1 science lesson on pages 28–29. There they learned that scientists ask questions, gather information, make tests, and learn new things. Explain that this is called a science experiment. Use the vocabulary routine for experiment. • Listen actively Play the audio. Ask children to listen and follow along with the cartoon. Tell them to point to the words in the cartoon as they hear them. Play the audio again and stop after each step. Monitor that children are pointing to the correct step in the picture. Essential Question: What are the steps in a science experiment? • Identify steps of content-related passages Ask children to read and discuss the essential question with a classmate. If children aren’t sure how to answer, tell them to look for the answers on the page. Elicit and write the steps on the board. ANSWERS Step 1: Ask a question. Step 2: Predict the answer. Step 3: Do an experiment. Step 4: Watch what happens. Step 5: Answer the question. • Reading comprehension Ask questions to assess children’ comprehension of the cartoon. For example: Point to the steps on the board and ask a question about each. Step 1: What question does Dr. Miro ask? Step 2: What answer does Dr. Aprendo predict? Step 3: What experiment do they do? Step 5: Do they answer the question?. EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Write the steps in a science experiment on strips of paper and provide groups of children with the strips. Ask them to organize the steps in the correct order according to the page. Then have them practice describing what the scientists did for each step. Amplify Provide additional scientific vocabulary. Tell children that to do an experiment, they must follow steps. The first step is to choose and investigate the topic. Next, the scientists create a hypothesis. This is the idea that the scientists want to prove. During the experiment, scientists write down observations. Then, when the experiment is over, scientists draw a conclusion. This explains what the scientists find out. Have children match the new vocabulary with the steps on the page. STEP 1 Ask a question. STEP 2 Predict the answer. Scientists in Action A Read about science experiments. Let’s Find Out! with Dr. Miro and Dr. Aprendo STEP 3 Do an experiment. STEP 5 Answer the question. STEP 4 Watch what happens. Find out what they know. Do the experiment on the next page. Plants need soil, water, and sunlight. I think that plants will not grow without them. Now we know that ... Aha! I think that ...
