UNIT X 180 | UNIT 5 Instructional Routine: After You Read p. Txxvii Reread A • Use visual aids to retell key details and events Direct children to the photos. Point out that these photos are all from the science article Plants Grow! They each show a different stage in the growth of a plant. Tell children to locate these pictures in the reading and reread the information associated with them. • Use academic language Remind children to use key words and scientific language from the reading to describe the pictures. Ask the class to brainstorm key words they need to describe the pictures; e.g., seed, roots, soil, sprout, leaves, stem, flower, bloom, sunlight, air, water. Write them on the board. • Recount a sequence of events Ask: How are these pictures organized? Elicit that the pictures are in a sequence. They show the order in which plants grow. Tell children they will describe how a plant grows, using the pictures as cues. To help children organize their descriptions, write sequence words on the board as cues: first, next, then, finally. • Work cooperatively Pair children to complete this activity orally. Monitor pairs to ensure that each child participates and follows rules for discussion. Suggest that pairs take turns leading the description of each picture. For example, Child 1 describes Picture 1 while Child 2 listens, asks questions, and contributes his or her own comments. Then they switch roles for Picture 2. • Present information on content-related topics Ask pairs to present their descriptions to the class. • Connect to math If possible, go outside with the class. Divide children into small groups. Groups need a ruler, paper, and markers. Ask children to choose three plants that they like. Have them measure the length of a leaf for each of the plants. Ask children to draw the leaves and write down the measurements next to each leaf. Tell children to compare and contrast their findings. PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Be purposeful about pairing. Instead of pairing children by proximity, consider pairing children with higher levels of proficiency with children who have lower levels of proficiency. The children with higher levels of proficiency can serve as peer tutors who can prompt and reinforce language. Amplify After they have completed Activity A, challenge children who are able to write sentences describing how a plant grows. Tell them to use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Talk: How do plants grow? Describe the stages of a plant’s growth to your teacher. Write: What are the parts of a plant? Draw and label the parts of a plant. Reread A Describe how a plant grows. 1 2 3 4 AFTER YOURead UNIT 5 180 CON22_1_SE_U05_180-181_AR.indd 180 30/10/2020 11:51 UNIT 5 / CAOFTNENREYCOTUTORETAHDE THEME
