UNIT X UNIT 5 | 179 • Use visual aids to determine the meanings of words Direct children to the pictures on this page. Point to the photo of the sheep and ask: Why is this picture here? Elicit that it is an example of an animal that eats plants. • Identify and read high frequency words Spiral back to the list of high frequency words on page 171. Make finding the words in the text a game. Say: The first word is all. Who can find the word all in the text? (It is on page 178.) Have the child who finds it first point it out to the class and read aloud the sentence. Repeat this procedure with the other words in the list. • Connect to self Ask individual children to tell you about the pages of the article they liked best and show the class those pages. Then have children draw a picture and write a sentence about the part of the article they liked best. • Reconstruct text Ask children to share their pictures with the class and read their sentences. Then help them place all of their pictures in sequential order and retell the story. Fill in any parts of the story for which there are no pictures. • Synthesize information to create new understanding Spiral back to the K-W-L chart that children began at the beginning of the Reading. Briefly review the information they have filled in the first two columns. Ask pairs of children to discuss and share one new thing they learned from the science article. As a class, add their ideas to the “Learned” column. Check In • Ask and answer Have children work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. Have them write down their answers in preparation for a class discussion. • Use evidence to support understanding Ask children to share their answers with the class. Ask them to point to the part of the text where they found their answer and read it aloud as evidence. ANSWERS 1. Plants grow in the mountains, in the oceans, and in the desert.; 2. Plants clean the air.; 3. Plants provide food for animals. PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Use proximity to listen for correct usage and pronunciation as pairs discuss the Check In questions. Recast incorrect usage and pronunciation in a supportive manner. Amplify Ask children to look back through the article and find all of the words that were new for them. Have them write the words in a list and then compare their list with a classmate. Have pairs work together to use each new word on both of their lists in a sentence. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Talk and write: Plants Grow! Ask and answer with a classmate: How does a seed become a plant? Write three sentences: What does a plant need to grow? Plants are important. They clean the air. They provide food for animals. They make the world a pretty place. Check In 1. Name three places where plants grow. 2. How do plants help the air? 3. How do plants help animals? 179 UNIT 5 Plants Grow CON22_1_SE_U05_170-179_RD.indd 179 30/10/2020 11:52 UNIT 5 / CREOANDNINECGT TO THE THEME
