UNIT X 178 | UNIT 5 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Pair children with the same language background to discuss and expand upon their knowledge of mountains, deserts, and oceans. Tell them to create an idea map for each using pictures, words, and names they know. For example, ocean: waves, sand, fish, Pacific, etc. Amplify Challenge children to name and draw a picture of three plants—one that grows in the desert, one that grows in the ocean, and one that grows in the mountains. Tell children to work in pairs and do research if necessary. Reading • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Follow oral content Play the audio for pages 178–179. Ask children to listen to the text for general understanding without looking at the written words. • Match oral to written words Play the audio for pages 178–179 again. This time ask children to read along silently. • Imitate intonation, phrasing, and pace Play the audio for these pages a final time. Ask children to do a whisper read along with the audio, trying to match the speaker’s intonation, phrasing, and pace exactly. Repeat as necessary until children feel confident. Ask one or several children together to read the page aloud. Provide encouragement and feedback on children’ oral reading fluency. • Use visual aids to determine the meanings of words Direct children to the pictures on this page. Point to the photo of the cactus and ask: Why is this picture here? Elicit that it is an example of a plant that lives in the desert. Point to the underwater photo and ask: Why is this picture here? Elicit that it shows plants that live in the ocean. Ask: What other place in nature is in this picture? (mountains) Use the vocabulary routine for mountains, desert, and ocean. • Generate questions about text after reading Ask children if they have any questions about the text on this page. If children need prompting, provide an example, such as Where else do plants grow? As a class, discuss their questions with each other and offer answers and ideas. • Participate in extended discussions Talk to children about different kinds of common plants (e.g., sunflowers, roses, palm trees, fruit trees, grass). Choose local plants that children are familiar with. Show pictures of each plant to aid comprehension. Divide children into groups. Tell children to ask other members of their group what their favorite plant is. Have children tally the results. Ask children to draw a picture chart showing the number of children who liked each plant best. Tell groups to share their charts with the class. Plants grow all over the world. There are plants in the mountains. There are plants in the desert. There are also plants in the ocean.
