UNIT X UNIT 5 | 175 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Enhance comprehension by bringing a real plant to class. Ask one child to read aloud a line while another child points to the corresponding part of the plant. Repeat with different children for each line. Amplify Write the words roots, stem, and leaves on the board. Challenge children to write sentences about each that tell why it is important. For example, Roots are important. Roots take food from the soil and bring it to the plant. • Generate questions about text while reading Ask children to think about the information they have read. Elicit any questions they might have. Tell children to help each other find the answers, or ask them to wait to see if they will discover the information later in the text. • Retell key details or events Direct children to the picture of the growing plant in the inset photo. Ask a child to identify the parts of the plant and describe the functions of the parts; e.g., This is a sprout. Here are the leaves. They make food. Here is the stem. It carries food. • Home-School connection Have children look at nature around or near their home. Ask them to find a plant they like. Have them draw the plant and label its parts. Then have them write a sentence about how to care for the plant; for example, This plant needs sun and water. Check In • Ask and answer Have pairs work together to ask each other the questions, and find and write their answers. • Respond to wh- questions Discuss the questions as a class. Have children point to the answers in the text as they find them. Note that question 3 is an inference question. They will not find the answer directly in the text. Ask children to explain the evidence for their answer. ANSWERS 1. A sprout grows to be a plant. 2. The leaves make food. 3. The stem has leaves. The stem carries food. PRACTICE Soon the plant has a stem. There are leaves on the stem. The leaves make food. The stem carries food. Check In 1. What does a sprout grow to be? 2. What part of the plant makes food? 3. How does the stem help the plant? 175 UNIT 5 Plants Grow CON22_1_SE_U05_170-179_RD.indd 175 30/10/2020 11:52 UNIT 5 / CREOANDNINECGT TO THE THEME
