UNIT X UNIT 5 | 173 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Be aware that some children may need a little more time to prepare their oral answers to the Check In questions. Read the questions aloud and then tell children to think about and formulate their answers in pairs before discussing them as a class. Amplify Challenge children to search the article and count how many times each of the key words appears: plant (n) (9), plant (v) (1), soil (4), roots (2), sprout (2), stem (3), leaves (2). Reading Strategy: Key Words • Identify key words Point out the highlighted word roots in the text. As a review, ask: What are roots? Elicit the answer and ask children to point to the roots shown in the photo. • Match vocabulary to illustrated stories Ask children to look at the circular photo of the stages of a plant’s growth. Have them talk in pairs about what is happening in each stage, using the key words on the page. • Make inferences Explain to children that they make inferences when they use clues from the reading and what they already know to figure out something that is not directly stated or explained in the reading. Have children make inferences about the weather and the season. For example, ask: Can seeds grow into a plant if it is cold and snowy? • Generate questions about text while reading Ask children to think about the information they have read. Elicit any questions they might have. If they have trouble thinking of questions, prompt them with an example. Say: I wonder what kind of plant this is that is growing. Do you think I will find out? Or, It says the roots take food from the soil and bring it to the plant. How do you think it does that? Some questions children may be able to answer immediately while other questions can be revisited after reading further in the text. Check In • Ask and answer Ask pairs to ask each other the questions and reread the text on pages 172–173 to find the answers. • Identify text evidence When reviewing the answers as a class, ask: How do you know this is the answer? Have children point to and read aloud the parts of the text that helped them find their answers. ANSWERS 1. soil and water; 2. Roots take food from the soil and bring it to the plant.
