UNIT X 172 | UNIT 5 Reading Strategy: Key Words • Identify key words Point out the highlighted words in the text. Remind children that they learned these vocabulary words on page 169. Reinforce that these key words are important to understand the reading. • Use visuals to enhance comprehension Point to the inset picture of the seeds. Ask: What is this? Elicit the answer and tell children to find the word seed in the text. Teach the singular and plural form. Reading • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Follow oral content Play the audio for pages 172–173. Ask children to listen to the text for general understanding without looking at the written words. • Match oral to written words Play the audio for pages 172–173 again. This time ask children to read along silently. • Imitate intonation, phrasing, and pace Play the audio for these pages a final time. Ask children to do a whisper read along with the audio, trying to match the speaker’s intonation, phrasing, and pace exactly. Repeat as necessary until children feel confident. Ask one or several children together to read the page aloud. Provide encouragement and feedback on children’s oral reading fluency. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Provide visual support for children to understand the text. Bring a cup of soil and a seed to class. Read the text aloud as you act the lines out: I plant a seed in the soil. Have children read and act out the lines as well. Amplify • Ask children with good oral fluency and pronunciation to model the text. Have them read aloud each line and have the class repeat. • Ask children to identify which use of the word plant is a noun and which is a verb. Tell them to act out each word.
