UNIT X UNIT 5 | 171 High Frequency Words Identify and read high frequency words Ask a child to read aloud the list of words. Call on individual children to find each word in the classroom list of high frequency words, point to it, read it aloud, and give an example sentence. Tell children to be on the lookout for these words as they read the text. Reading: Plants Grow • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Follow oral content Play the audio for page 171. Ask children to listen to the text for general understanding without looking at the written words. • Match oral to written words Play the audio for page 171 again. This time ask children to read along silently. • Imitate intonation, phrasing, and pace Play the audio for this page a final time. Ask children to do a whisper read along with the audio, trying to match the speaker’s intonation, phrasing, and pace exactly. Repeat as necessary until children feel confident. Ask one or several children together to read the page aloud. Provide encouragement and feedback on children’ oral reading fluency. Check In • Monitor comprehension Ask and answer the questions as a class. Point out that the answer to question 1 is given in the text, although they could also infer the answer from the picture. Tell children to point out and identify all of the elements in the picture. • Connect to self Ask children if they have ever seen a place like this. Ask them to share personal experiences. After children hear the article in their home language, have them participate in an echo reading of the English version. The teacher reads a section first and then the children repeat it and try to replicate the pace, intonation, and expression. Amplify Have children of higher proficiency levels summarize or retell the information on each page in their own words. Tell them to point to and use the illustrations to aid in retelling.
