UNIT X 168 | UNIT 5 Instructional Routine: Before You Read p. Txxv Reading Strategy: Organize Details • Identify main idea Explain that the main idea of a text is what it is mostly about. Quickly draw a series of pictures on the board: a soccer ball, a soccer goal, a soccer field, and two stick figures running. Ask: What are the pictures about? What is the main idea? Elicit the answer: soccer, and write it on the board in the middle of the pictures. • Identify details Point to the pictures of the soccer ball, the goal, and the players and say: These are details. What are the details about the main idea soccer? Elicit: You need a soccer ball and a goal to play soccer. Boys and girls play. • Organize details Explain the reading strategy. Say: As you read, think about the information you learn. Identify the information as the main idea or details. A Idea Map • Use a graphic and semantic organizer Say: Look at the idea map. This is a way to organize the main idea and details. Draw circles around the pictures on the board and connect them to the main idea “soccer” to form an idea map. • Confirm comprehension Ask children to read the idea map on page 168. Ask: What is the main idea? What is a detail? How are the details organized? Children should recognize that the details are organized by each of the four seasons. B • Identify information from graphics Have children copy the main idea and two details on paper. Tell them to choose which details to write. Use this activity as an assessment of how well they have understood the lesson. • Confirm comprehension Ask children to draw pictures to illustrate the idea map.
