Unit X | 173 PROJECT | 165H UNIT 5 Suggestions UNIT 5 Project Project Create and perform a play about the life cycle of a sunflower seed Lead children in reviewing each step in the life cycle of a sunflower seed. Brainstorm with children how they can move/hold their bodies to depict a tiny seed, send out a little root, then a shoot, then gradually grow taller, grow leaves, a bud, and a flower, and finally enact dropping their seeds so that the cycle can begin again (e.g., curling up into a tiny ball on floor, sticking out 1 foot for 1st root, 1 arm up for 1st shoot, slowly standing up, etc.). Review the seasons with children, brainstorm ways of acting out various types of weather for each season. With the children, make a list of the non-fiction “characters” in the play, and either assign each child a character or have them choose to be a sunflower, or a type of weather/season. With the children, generate a title for the play based on the non-fiction story. Practice acting it out. Children can use their sunflower paintings as props and can also create paintings of weather/seasons to use as props. Invite families or another class in your school to come see your play!
